Produced on the occasion of the exhibition, Isa Genzken—Works From 1973 To 1983, at the Kunsthalle Basel, 5 September, 2020–24 January 2021, which is dedicated to the artist’s early oeuvre. The publication opens with works from her time as a student at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts (1973-1977) and details the evolution of her art up to 1983. The works shown include sculptures, computer printouts, extensive series of drawings, photographs and films. The artist blends conceptual approaches with personal themes; many works that initially seem to be exercises in geometric abstraction prove upon closer examination to be traces of her own existence, telling stories of personal relationships and the vagaries of desire.

Jochen Lempert photographs the animal world in the most diverse contexts: from their natural habitat to the museum of natural history, from the zoo to the urban environment, in remote places or banal settings and situations. Lempert compiles his findings in a vast archive of images covering an ample spectrum, from common everyday views, to compositions that tend towards abstraction. This interest in the natural world as a subject has been further complemented by his exploration of the properties and materiality of the photographic image. Analogue, black and white, hand-printed in the darkroom, his photographs resist categorization and confront the canons of today’s aesthetic.

Live Volume 1, concentrates on a major exhibition of new sculptural works at Museum Ludwig. A full-scale reproduction of fragments of the artist’s house in Los Angeles grafted onto the architecture of the Ludwig museum, the exhibition collapses two spaces together, producing a strange third space.

Live Volume 2, comprises a photographic monograph of selected works covering the artist’s unconventional production over the past five years. Combining documentation of significant individual works, exhibitions, and large-scale installations with the artist’s own production documentation of works in the studio, the book is a unique look at works in progress.

Hei­mo Zobernig’s ex­per­i­men­tal ap­proach to the con­cept of sculp­ture of­ten leads him to pre­vi­ous­ly un­ex­plored boun­daries be­tween art and ar­chi­tec­ture or de­sign. For in­s­tance, he de­vel­oped two large-scale, black in­s­tal­la­tions for the floor and ceil­ing of the Aus­trian pav­ilion at the Venice Bien­nale in 2015, which play­ful­ly ques­tion the re­la­tion­ship be­tween bodies in space. Part of this rad­i­cal yet min­i­mal­ist in­s­tal­la­tion was trans­ferred to the Mu­se­um Lud­wig where he full-scale re­pli­ca served as a pedes­tal for the mu­se­um’s sculp­ture col­lec­tion. This succinct place­ment can be read as a hu­mor­ous and iron­ic com­men­tary on col­lec­tions and artis­tic self-con­cep­tion.

The Los Angeles-based artist and art writer Frances Stark has gathered an international cult following for her prolific prose and her smart, honest and intimate artwork. This engaging artist’s book is conceived as a companion piece to Stark’s Collected Writings 1993–2003, fashioning itself as a graphic counterpart that draws from the artist’s paintings, collages, drawings, videos, poetry and more, from 1993 to the present. Through provocative and diaristic text notes printed alongside Stark’s sometimes humorous, often self-scrutinizing images, Collected Works addresses the paradox of reproducing visual art that is essentially non-photogenic by nature–because of its tactility, detail or scale.
