From shaming and shamefulness to shame-avoidance and shamelessness, the experience of shame influences our social behaviours, decision making abilities, and desires. Shame determines what we show and what we hide. And yet, as an emotion that begs for its own concealment, what is the structure and appearance of shame? How does shame interact with the realm of the visible, and where does it surface in visual culture? In this extensive historical and contemporary analysis of shame and its power, artist Andrea Büttner probes the definitions and representations of shame. The book includes close readings of Sigmund Freud’s writings on play and fantasy, challenges theoretical approaches to Andy Warhol’s queer performativity on film, and frames Dieter Roth’s representations of shame in his writing and moving image work.

Leirner cre­ates in­s­tal­la­tions, col­lages, and sculp­tures using found, of­ten in­dus­trial­ly man­u­fac­tured ev­ery­day ob­jects, ac­cord­ing to the prin­ci­ples of col­lect­ing, ac­cu­mu­lat­ing, and clas­si­fy­ing play an im­por­tant role in her work. This re­sults in dense, of­ten min­i­mal­ist works that play with the aes­thet­ic, rep­re­sen­ta­tio­n­al, and so­cio-cul­tu­r­al lev­els of mean­ing of the ob­jects.

Accompanying the first in-depth survey of her work in the UK, Linderism offers four new perspectives on Linder’s wide-ranging practice by James Boaden, Alyce Mahon, Amy Tobin and Sarah Victoria Turner. The essays address Linder’s early photomontages forged in the crucible of punk and post-punk culture in the North-West of England, as well as more recent shifts in her practice encompassing spirituality, the occult, and the surreal. Linderism is fully illustrated including extensive documentation of working drawings, and research images—the materials that have long formed the basis of her practice—as well as documentation of works included in the survey exhibition.

Produced on the occasion of Jack Goldstein’s first exhibition at Galerie Buchholz in 2000, with aphorisms by the artist, a new essay by John Miller and an interview by Morgan Fisher. The book also includes a commented list of Jack Goldstein’s films and records.

Jack Goldstein was one of the most important artists of the 80’s in New York. He returned to California in the 90’s and slowly disappeared from the art world until renewed interest in his work began to happen in 2000. He was in the first graduating class from CalArts and went on to experiment with performance, film, recording, sculpture, and painting. His art of the late seventies, eighties, and early nineties influenced many artists who came after him. He died on 14 March, 2003.

The work by Flemish artist, Lili Dujourie unfolds out of the gap between painting and sculpture. After making debut with steel and colour objects in the late 1960s, Dujourie’s practice shifted into photography and video in the 1970s.

As well as exploring the blurring between art disciplines, in these new media she also raised gender-and identity-related issues prevalent at that time. The duality of movement and standstill inherent to film has fed the artist’s three-dimensional work from the 1980s to the present.

Nightcleaners (1975) by the Berwick Street Film Collective has long been recognised as a landmark of British experimental film and political cinema. Together with its companion film ’36 to ’77 (1978), it pioneered a film form as radical as the Collective’s politics. The films chronicle one of the key campaigns of the women’s movement in the 1970s. The campaign to unionise women night cleaners in London anticipates contemporary issues regarding precarious labour. To celebrate the first digital release of the films, a special box set has been produced containing the two films on disc, reproductions of historical material, including news sheets of the women’s movement – one designed by Mary Kelly, a member of the Film Collective, an interview with whom is also included as well as rare illustrations and contributions from the filmmakers.
