Language is at the heart of Katalin Ladik’s practice. Her expansive attitude to poetry materializes on the pages of her books, in music scores, on the wall, through concrete poems, and visual collages, almost all of them accompanied by sonic interpretations that show the artist’s extraordinary vocal range.

All these works speak to Ladik’s process of “logopoiesis”: to bring into existence new registers of language through acts of poetry, utterance, and visualization. Or, to follow the title of her eponymous 1976-album, a process of “phonopoetica”, to understand poetry through the voice.

Murakami Saburō’s ‘Paper-Breaking’ performances, in which he burst through multiple sheets of kraft paper stretched across wooden frames with a sharp crack, were synonymous with the artist. He performed them on close to 40 occasions, between 1955 and 1994, throughout his artistic career. Murakami said that, in 1955, he was inspired to adopt this approach after his son came crashing through the fusuma (sliding door) of his locked room (where the artist was polishing up a plan for a new work to present in the 1st Gutai Art Exhibition) in a bid to get his father to play with him. From that time on, ‘Paper-Breaking’ became a physical means for him to present and investigate questions related to time and space, chance and inevitability, and the self and others.

Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek (KwieKulik) since the 1970s pioneered the transformation of artistic practice into social experimentation. KwieKulik sought to reconcile artistic praxis with everyday life, essentially basing on the premise that form is a fact of society. The couple’s pioneering approach to film, photography, and multi-screen slide projection epitomise their unique variation of expanded cinema.

This monograph, stemming from a long-term research project on the KwieKulik Archive, documents Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek’s collective works from 1971 to 1987, illuminating the radically unique position of the artists in the history of neo-avant-garde in Central Europe. The book covers and documents more than 200 events, and includes a “KwieKulik Glossary,” the collection of concepts introduced and applied by the artists. The essays in the book are featuring excerpts from texts devoted to KwieKulik in the course of the last decades.

From the mid-1970s until her death at age 31 in 1982, Korean-born artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha created a rich body of conceptual art that explored displacement and loss. Her works included artists’ books, mail art, performance, audio, video, film, and installation. Although grounded in French psychoanalytic film theory, her art is also informed by far-ranging cultural and symbolic references, from shamanism to Confucianism and Catholicism. Her collage-like book Dictée, which was published posthumously in 1982, is recognized as an influential investigation of identity in the context of history, ethnicity and gender.
