Paradis is a continuation of the eponymous exhibition conceived by artist Marie Angeletti in Marseilles in 2021. The exhibition brought together 56 artists of different origins and generations. More than just a transcription of this event, this catalogue brings together some one hundred contributions, combining critical texts, poetry, artists’ writings and new translations, alongside an equally large number of visual contributions and ad hoc works, most of them previously unpublished.

Correspondences
Heinz Peter Knes
Published by Is-Land, Aubervilliers, 2023, 128 pp. (b/w ill.), 12.5 × 19.5 cm, English
Price: €15

For thirty years, Heinz Peter Knes has developed a large body of work, focusing on photographic-documentary practice that seeks to engage image with society. Reflecting on the multiple “correspondences”, influences and interactions at the heart of his artistic work, we travel with him through the five chapters of this book, crossing paths with Josef Winkler, Hervé Guibert, Pasolini, Moyra Davey, Julie Ault, Jean-Luc Moulène, Danh Vo, Artaud and many others. Creating a new language, a sort of echo, as sensitive experience, which in a way dematerialize our perceptions, but enable “to gather” them.

Robert Kinmont
Published by Alexander and Bonin, New York, 2009, 8 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 20.2 × 20.2 cm, English
Price: €22

From his early days in the high desert near the small town of Bishop in southern California, Robert Kinmont’s work has been informed by the surrounding landscapes and ecosystems which also provide the foundation to his process.

Utilizing an amateur and handmade approach to both photography and sculpture, Kinmont illustrates the human scale and its relationship to one’s surroundings. Incorporating both irony and humour the works explore the systems and structures that continue to develop within this relationship.

In her essay, Julie Ault observes that “for the artist, the photographs imply the investigation of the distinct mental operations of applying a standard selection criteria to different objects, which required him to ‘re-set time,’ and to ‘think about that structural / functional criteria of our brain.’”—Exhibition Press release, 2009

Malicious Mischiefs
Martin Wong
Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 2022, 352 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 21.5 × 28 cm, English
Price: €45 (Temporarily out of stock)

Martin Wong is recognized for his depictions of social, sexual, and political scenographies from the American 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Poetically weaving together narratives of queer existence, marginal communities, and urban gentrification, Wong stands out as an important countercultural voice at odds with the art establishment’s reactionary discourse at the time. Heavily influenced by the artist’s immediate surroundings, Wong’s practice merges the visual languages of Chinese iconography, urban poetry, graffiti, carceral aesthetics, and sign language. His work offers a valuable insight into decisive periods of recent American history.
