Produced on the occasion of the exhibition John Knight, a work in situ, Galerie Neu/MD 72, Berlin, 6 June–20 July, 2013 where Knight repurposed the wooden panelling form the outside of the building that housed Galerie Neu until 2013.

“this panelling moved to the project space of the same gallery called MD 72, in Berlin too. It was adapted to the space of MD 72 by cutting holes for doors, windows, electric sockets etc. From the top to the bottom, from the outside to the inside.”

Produced on the occasion of John Knight’s exhibition at The Renaissance Society, Chicago, 1983. Including an in-depth essay by art historian Anne Rorimer. Her investigation of Museotypes, the particular piece conceived for Knight’s Renaissance Society exhibition, points to its specific implications while her consideration of related earlier pieces further demonstrates the character and development of his work in general.

Produced on the occasion of the exhibition John Knight WORKS IN SITU, A WORK IN SITU at Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle, Munich, 19 April–17 May, 2008.

Produced to accompany John Knight’s site-specific project 87º at the Storm King Art Center. Installed on Storm King’s Museum Hill, it comprised of a telescope—similar to those used by tourists at scenic overlooks—and the view through the telescope’s lens. When directed toward the 87 degrees of the work’s title, the telescope focuses in on a rounded water tower, erected by the former Star Expansion Company in 1958, just south of Storm King’s property. In prioritizing this viewpoint, Knight conceptually connects Storm King’s pastoral hills with the industrial production just beyond them. Star Expansion Company, which manufactured industrial fasteners, was owned and operated by the family that founded Storm King.

Since 1969, American artist John Knight (1945) has concentrated on the relationship between architecture, design and art. He bases his work on the interplay between the material object and its contextual conditions, and comments on the meaning of cultural object and cultural space by employing strategies that invert the conventions of production and reception.
