The Complete Editions
Blinky Palermo
Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 2019, 216 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 17.5 × 24.8 cm, English / German
Price: €35 (Out of stock)

Blinky Palermo, is known for his large fabric and metal pictures as well as his objects and installations. Less well known, yet no less interesting, are the works he created in editions: screen prints and offset prints, lithographs, objects, and a template for painting. In their entirety, these works not only reflect Palermo’s development from the 1960s to his early death in 1977, but also show how the artist deliberately expanded his work with the possibilities of technical reproduction. Thanks to a donation from the Cologne collector Ulrich Reininghaus, in 2018 a complete set of Palermo’s editions became part of the Museum Ludwig’s collection. After having been subject to an in-depth scholarly research, they will now be presented in an exhibition for the first time. This exhibition catalogue also includes an updated version of Fred Jahn’s out-of-print catalogue raisonné from 1983.

Der Spiegel 1989–1991
Isa Genzken
Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 2003, 248 pages (b/w ill.), 30.5 × 21.5 cm, English
Price: €55 (Out of stock)

Isa Genzken’s Der Spiegel 1989–1991 consists of 121 reproductions of black-and-white photographs cut out of the influential German newsweekly Der Spiegel over a period of three years. The images are presented starkly, bereft of photo credits or captions: having been freed from their usual meaning-giving context, the images assume a mystery and free-floating universality as the viewer unconsciously struggles to recall the specificity of the sensational news story and headline to which they were once attached. The book is produced in a limited edition of 700 numbered copies.

The Music of Color
Sam Gilliam
Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 2018, 192 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 24 × 30.5 cm, English
Price: €80

Produced on the occasion of the exhibition The Music of Color, Sam Gilliam, 1967–1973, 9 June–30 September, 2018, Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel. Texts by Sam Gilliam, Jonathan P. Binstock, Lynette Yiadiom Boakye, Larne Abse Gogarty, Josef Helfenstein, Rashid Johnson and Rafael Squirru.

Sam Gilliam emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways by suspending stretcherless lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces. For an African-American artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change.

Christopher Williams
Published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 2020, 42 pages (b/w ill.), 15 × 23 cm, English / German

As part of his practice as an artist and professor Christopher Williams’ art is founded in historical research, and the manifestations of realism in relationship to theatrical, cinematic, and photographic production from the late 60s and early 70s in Germany. Thus he inevitably came across the plays of legendary German author Franz Xaver Kroetz, this first English language translation of his play Inklusive (1971) is the product of his curiosity. Inklusive consists of seven scenes of tightly scripted dialogue of a West German couple on a prepaid all-inclusive vacation package in Italy. It is the 2nd part of a new series of books edited, designed and produced by Christopher Williams.
