Since the early 1990s, Berlin-based artist Manfred Pernice has created sculptural vessels with scales, materials, and aesthetics derived from the worlds of architecture, shipping cargo, and mass packaging—these works serve as complex, open-ended meditations on the increased segmentation, containment, and, to use Pernice’s term, “canning” of objects and space. His seemingly slapdash sculptures are often juxtaposed with sketches, maquettes, photographs, text and, more recently, video to create systems of meaning.

Produced on the occasion of Tomo Savić-Gecan’s exhibition Untitled, 2010 at Bergen Kunsthall, 8 October–22 December, 2010, curated by Elena Filipovic.

Tomo Savić-Gecan constructs artworks that literally exist between present and future, here and there, between one public space and another, and between the minds of a viewer, wherever they might be, and the institutional space of the exhibition, which might happen to be somewhere else. For instance, as when he devised a situation so that visitors to an exhibition about the theme of “economy” were asked to decide on the entrance price for the visitor that would enter immediately after him or her (Untitled, 2000). Or as in his piece shown in Venice for the 2005 Biennale, where a line of text on an exhibition space’s wall recounted that the number of visitors at that very moment entering an art centre in Amsterdam was impacting the temperature of a public pool in Tallinn (the pool having been programmed to receive the real time information and alter its temperature in relation to it), (Untitled, 2005).

The Imaginary Number is a collection of nine single projects and new groupings of works, including drawings, installations, sculptures and video and film installations. Not primarily a thematic exhibition, the independent works on display share some motifs on various levels, mainly their concern with the complex magic of the everyday – the role of the imaginary in the way we shape and make sense of the world.

More than thirty years ago the Swiss-Argentine artist Vivian Suter (*1949) moved to the rain forest in Panajachel, Guatemala, to live on a former coffee plantation. Since then she has worked on her impressive paintings in her wooden-hut studio, as well as outdoors. Her canvases lie on the sandy ground or hang in trees; dust, mud, leaves, mangos, and insects leave their traces on them. Her painting is influenced by organic processes and coincidence—even natural disasters are her material, when flood waters make their mark on canvases, becoming part of her large, colorful paintings. The book Christoforos Savva: Untimely, Again is published on the occasion of the participation of the Republic of Cyprus at the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale. Untimely, Again is a posthumous exhibition of works by Christoforos Savva (1924–1968) presented at the Cyprus Pavilion.

The publication focuses, in a very precise but also circumscribed manner, on a specific aspect of Christoforos Savva’s work that is beyond the artist’s control: the artwork’s presence in the world. The moment the work leaves the studio and goes into the world is, quite often, when artists themselves find out whether it has sufficient autonomy and strength. In Savva’s case and particularly in the case of such a fragmented photographic archive – and, therefore, so fascinating and suggestive – as the one presented in the book, the glimpses of his work in contact with the world over time silently witness and reflect the transformations of a society. Looking at, often blurred or slightly crooked, amateur photographs is a way to reaffirm that what matters, when one faces the work of Christoforos Savva, is not only or not so much individually looking at each painting, yfasmatography, or relief on its own, but also looking at the world around them. The Memory of The Archive: Christoforos Savva in the 1954–1968 Cypriot Press & Literary Periodicals is published on the occasion of the survey exhibition project Untimely on Time: Christoforos Savva (1924–1968), co-organised by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, Cultural Services and Point Centre for Contemporary Art, Nicosia and presented at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art – SPEL, Nocosia, Cyprus, between 31 January and 31 March 2019.

The book is a compilation and an archive of press cuttings, consisting of more than two hundred articles, commentaries, reports, and advertisements that appeared in the mainstream Cypriot press and literary periodicals between 1954 and 1968 and relate to the Christoforos Savva. The press cuttings are treated as objects with a story, a narrative worth telling with the goal of shedding new light on the artist’s life and career. Designed by Studio Manuel Raeder.
