Correspondences: de Appel 1975-2025 traces the activities of de Appel through letters, telegrams, airmail, postcards, faxes, and emails, sent to and by de Appel. The book features materials by more than a hundred different authors and includes paper-based and digital correspondence by, amongst many others, Laurie Anderson, James Lee Byars, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, General Idea, Mona Hatoum, Patricia Kaersenhout and Carolee Schneemann. Context is provided by written guest contributions by Alice Butler, Alison Burstein, Annet Dekker, Susan Gibb and Brian Fuata and de Appel’s archivist Nell Donkers. An edition by Alison Knowles in the shape of a ribbon forms a special prompt to the reader of the book.

This publication is an unedited reprint of the catalogue originally published by de Appel in 1980 as a follow-up to the international art manifestation Works and Words. The event sought to break with the one-way traffic of Western artists traveling to the East by inviting artists from Eastern Bloc countries to Amsterdam. The invited artists, theoreticians, film-makers, and art historians represented a broad spectrum of practices, theoretical approaches, and developments. Including artists such as; KwieKulik (Zofia Kulik and Przemysłav Kwiek), Július Koller, Jiří Kovanda, Dóra Maurer, Sanja Iveković and Dalibor Martinis, Mladen Stilinovic, Jozef Robakowski amongst others.

This publication documents and shares the trajectory of If I Can’t Dance’s engagement with ‘Social Movement’ as the field of inquiry for its seventh biannual programme (2017–18). The Remote* Archivist is a recurring publication from the Archive of de Appel that can also be accessed while the reader is physically distant, or the archive is far away. The distance, and at the same time the fickle proximity of digital platforms is now translated into the tangibility of archivistic messages.

In this first series of three episodes, Arefeh Riahi, Maartje Fliervoet and Martín La Roche Contreras came together as “To See the Inability to See” and created the feuilleton: Outdated Compass.
