Roma and afterwards
Hannah Villiger
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2021, 168 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 16 × 22.5 cm, English
Price: €25

With texts by Elizabeth Bronfen, Gioia Dal Molin, Quinn Latimer, Thomas Schmutz.

Hannah Villiger lived and worked as a resident artist at Istituto Svizzero in Rome from 1974 to 1976. There she realized her early artistic ideas and developed the sculptural approach to photography that would shape all of her later work—namely large-format photographs of her own body arranged into blocks of several images, which show close-ups of sometimes fragmented and abstracted body parts. Villiger viewed herself as a sculptor rather than a photographer, and these Roman years were decisive in shaping her artistic practice. In her studio and in the garden of Villa Maraini, she first developed simple objects inspired by the materials of Arte Povera, then gradually shifted to photography, perceiving it as a more sculptural method.

You can find more on her work here.

Jacob Kassay
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2015, 180 pages (b/w ill.), 21.5 × 28 cm, English
Price: €35 (Temporarily out of stock)

Produced on occasion of Jacob Kassay’s exhibition at R.M. Schindler’s Fitzpatrick-Leland House in Los Angeles, 26–27 September, 2015.

This artist’s book has been developed as an index—with relative digitally drawn blueprints, structural diagrams and basic dimensional specifications—for the entire series of wooden stretchers that are part of “Remnants,” previously exhibited at The Kitchen and 303 Gallery in New York (2013).

“Recuperating leftover pieces of canvas that remain from those he cuts and stretches, Jacob Kassay found himself […] with a collection of scraps that still had value. More specifically, these scraps were of value to Kassay because they indexed his system of production. Once again, he seized upon a system that fetishizes his hand but discounts any aesthetic decision. These canvas forms, which Kassay calls ‘remnants,ʼ were made negatively through the creation of silver paintings and other works.”—Peter Eeley

Michael E. Smith
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2021, 148 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 16.5 × 23.5 cm, English
Price: €34

Michael E. Smith (born 1977 in Detroit) makes sculptures out of cast-offs, waste and other residues of our consumer society. He assembles and manipulates this found material in an unusual way. He isolates objects, makes changes to their form and seeks out the limits of their imaginative power. His presentations are characterized by an intense yet sparse choreography of the exhibition space.

Initially conceived to document three solo shows at de Appel in Amsterdam (2015), Kunstverein Hannover (2015), and S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2017), the publication also gathers new commissioned texts and a reprint that shed light on the artist’s decade-plus practice.

With texts by Martin Germann, Anthony Huberman, Chris Sharp.

Magali Reus
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2016, 80 pages, softcover w. plastic dust jacket, (colour & b/w ill.), 16 × 23 cm, English
Price: €25 (Out of stock)

In the spring of 2015, Magali Reus opened the first in a series of four exhibitions of new work co-commissioned and presented by SculptureCenter, New York; Hepworth Wakefield, England; Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster, Germany; and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy. The culmination of these collaborative projects is documented in this publication, marking an important chapter in the evolution of Reus’s work.

Renowned for her interest in the relationship between mass-produced articles and the human body in the context of today’s digital society, Magali Reus draws on a vast range of formal influences and references, from the domestic to the industrial, the functional to decorative, creating pieces that evolve as an accumulation and layering of sculptural details. For her, objects like fridges, padlocks, seating, and street curbs are not seen only as facilitators of our everyday actions, but also as physical receptacles for our bodies.
