Produced on the occasion of Vincent Fecteau’s exhibition at the Wattis Institute in San Francisco in the fall of 2019. Along with a group of new sculptures by Fecteau, the exhibition also featured two works by Lutz Bacher. The catalogue includes texts by Anthony Huberman, who curated the exhibition, Don Potts, Renny Pritikin and Fanny Singer.

Michael E. Smith (born 1977 in Detroit) makes sculptures out of cast-offs, waste and other residues of our consumer society. He assembles and manipulates this found material in an unusual way. He isolates objects, makes changes to their form and seeks out the limits of their imaginative power. His presentations are characterized by an intense yet sparse choreography of the exhibition space.

Initially conceived to document three solo shows at de Appel in Amsterdam (2015), Kunstverein Hannover (2015), and S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2017), the publication also gathers new commissioned texts and a reprint that shed light on the artist’s decade-plus practice.

Driven by the central question “What are we learning from artists today?” the first volume of the new series edited by Anthony Huberman and Jeanne Gerrity at the CCA Wattis, A Series of Open Questions, is informed by themes found in the work of Dodie Bellamy, such as contemporary forms of feminism and sexuality, the rebirth of the author, and ways in which vulnerability, perversion, vulgarity, and self-exposure can be forms of empowerment. Kunstverein is essentially a curatorial office that offers lectures, presentations, screenings, and independent publishing. Because of its unconventional structure, it allows alternative methods to be considered in terms of presentation, hosting, and exhibition-making. This extensive anthology looks back at the past decade of their activity, from 2009 to 2019, and is filled with ephemera, images of performances and shows, bulletins, and much more. With contributions by Yana Foqué, Krist Gruijthuijsen, Anthony Huberman, and Maxine Kopsa.

In his catalogue essay, curator Anthony Huberman explains that the works in this exhibition ‘reflect on what it could mean to contest the regime of the machine’. That is, they question the worship of usefulness in modern scientific civilisation, which is refused or even ridiculed by each piece on show. It’s a strong concept, and potentially extends to how the works are placed in the labyrinthine space of the Secession. If the point is to produce friction, then the disorganisation of Other Mechanisms—the inability of its parts to add up to a coherent whole—is a paradoxical form of success.

Instead of documenting the exhibition, the catalogue reflects and expands on some of its core ideas. Designed by Scott Ponik and Julie Peeters, the book’s fabrication makes use of different printing techniques and “machines,” including an offset printer, a letterpress, and thermography, as well as a wide range of natural and synthetic paper stocks. Contributions by each of the exhibiting artists range from photo essays, theoretical essays, video transcripts and stills, interviews, and works designed especially for the page.
