Kai Althoff creates installations, drawings, paintings, photographs, videos and collages; he is also a musician and performer. His fragmentary and enigmatic aesthetic, where the figurative sometimes tends towards a stylization bordering on abstraction, is inspired by subcultures, historical events, religious imagery and his own childhood.

This comprehensive publication is Althoff’s third monograph. It contains never before seen works in addition to images from every stage of the artist’s career, concentrating most heavily on work since 2002.

Conceived as a reader, this volume includes essays by cultural critic Elisabeth Lebovici, Claire Le Restif, Fiona Corridan, garden historian Marco Martella, and journalist and activist Cy Lecerf Maulpoix, a comprehensive interview with Jarman’s collaborator James Mackay, as well as testimonies—among other Jarman’s friends—by actress Tilda Swinton and musician Simon Fisher Turner, and an illustrated chronology.

Jarman’s militant Queer Paintings series (1992), his tender Super8 films from the mid-1970s, his emotional assemblages made at Prospect Cottage (Dungeness, Kent) whose cultivation was both a form of therapy and a metaphor for his own survival after he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986, are considered together to focus on Jarman as a visual artist—a painter and an assemblagist—and how his artistic practice can be understood as a catalyst for his manifold activities and visions.

Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek (KwieKulik) since the 1970s pioneered the transformation of artistic practice into social experimentation. KwieKulik sought to reconcile artistic praxis with everyday life, essentially basing on the premise that form is a fact of society. The couple’s pioneering approach to film, photography, and multi-screen slide projection epitomise their unique variation of expanded cinema.

This monograph, stemming from a long-term research project on the KwieKulik Archive, documents Zofia Kulik and Przemyslaw Kwiek’s collective works from 1971 to 1987, illuminating the radically unique position of the artists in the history of neo-avant-garde in Central Europe. The book covers and documents more than 200 events, and includes a “KwieKulik Glossary,” the collection of concepts introduced and applied by the artists. The essays in the book are featuring excerpts from texts devoted to KwieKulik in the course of the last decades.

The first overview of the variety and scope of the research carried out by Renée Green over the past twenty years. Green’s work is located both within the legacy of the most ambitious achievements of Conceptual and post-Minimal art, and within a post-colonial critique of culture. It often takes the form of complex, multi-layered archive-like installations that employ a vast array of sources, and point to a variety of issues, always involving the spectator as active participant through multiple points of access.

Piero Gilardi (born 1942 in Torino) is a pioneer of Arte Povera and a proud advocate of an ecological-concerned undertaking in visual arts. He is a peripatetic artist who gathered information about experimental art and creators in the 1960s, promoting the work of Richard Long or Jan Dibbets, and introducing Bruce Nauman or Eva Hesse into Europe. He is also a political activist who marched with FIAT workers in the 1970s, and who founded, in the 2000s the Living Art Park, commissioning earthworks to contemporary artists such as Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster or Lara Almarcegui.

A central figure in Glasgow’s vibrant art scene, Luke Fowler’s cinematic collages break down conventional approaches to biographical and documentary filmmaking. Fowler’s films have often been linked to British Free Cinema, the distinctive aesthetic of which came out of a conscious decision to engage with the reality of contemporary Britain in the 1950s. Avoiding didactic voice-over commentaries and narrative continuity, Fowler similarly uses impressionistic sound and editing. However, Fowler moves beyond simply referencing the work of his predecessors. Intuitively applying the logic, aesthetics, and politics of his subjects onto the film he is making about them, he creates atmospheric, sampled histories that reverberate with the vitality of the people he studies.
