Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Photography and Fashion Since the 1990s at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, 3 March–5 October, 2020, including photographers Anders Edström, Kyoji Takashi, Elein Fleiss, Yukinori Maeda, PUGMENT and Takashi Homma.

The 1990s saw the emergence of photographers who went beyond the conventional framework for communicating the appeal of fashion items to create images that appeal to people. Moreover, fashion magazines appeared that took an independent stance in transmitting information. Images created from new points of view influenced people’s thinking and lifestyles. Those images have been referred to repeatedly by subsequent generations.

This publication accompanies Eyes, an exhibition presented in public space, featuring seven billboards across the city of Graz, each displaying compositions of eye makeup by Inge Grognard, photographed by Grognard herself backstage during the preparation of runway preparations and fashion shoots.

Inge Grognard is a pioneering Belgian makeup artist whose work has shaped avant-garde fashion for decades. As a teenager, she befriended Martin Margiela, an encounter that shaped both their creative paths, leading to a two-decade collaboration that helped define the raw, deconstructed aesthetic of Maison Martin Margiela. In the mid-1980s, Grognard became an integral force within the Antwerp Six, working closely with Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene, and Marina Yee.

Emerging from the 1990s New York fashion scene, Susan Cianciolo garnered a cult like following for her label RUN. Since exiting the fashion world in the early 2000s, Cianciolo has become renowned for making art that delves into memory and the spiritual. Fusing the language of textiles, painting, drawing and craft with the natural world she simultaneously conjures both the humble and the huge.

In this artist book, Cianciolo documents her love of trees and the land around Lovewell Lake and other lush areas that are particularly close to her and her family.

This internationally-oriented journal is organised into sections based on the date and the city from which the contributor submits his or her thoughts, observations, photographs, and/or stories. The result is a collection of news and insights from around the world during a particular period, in this case, January 6 through May 2, 2007.
