Produced on the occasion of Motion, a major exhibition by Dutch artist, graphic designer, and educator Karel Martens at Kunstverein München. Co-edited by Martens and Julie Peeters, the bulk of the content for this book comes from the video Not for Resale—a sequence of photographs from Martens’ studio wall in Hoog Keppel in 2000. The videos Lost & Found (2004), and Tol (2008) are also included in the book, as well as a transcription of a conversation between Martens and Kunstverein director Chris Fitzpatrick.

Located in what is now Central Queensland, Australia, Carnarvon Gorge is one of Australia’s most important historical and natural landmarks. For many centuries, the gorge has been a canvas on which Indigenous artists and communities have imprinted their histories, through stenciled images of weaponry and shields, domestic tools, ceremonial objects, and indexes of the human body. Brisbane-based artist Dale Harding—a descendant of the Bidjara, Ghungalu, and Garingbal peoples of Central Queensland, born in 1982—approaches the site as a map. By making copies of the represented objects, he traces their formal and material lineage, which is often embedded in the colonial narrative by their problematic inclusion in ethnographic collections and museums.

(the drum) is one of Ulises Carrión’s early linguistic exercises in English, originally handwritten in black ink in 1972. The artist fragments the names of musical instruments to express a sound. His attitude to poetry precluded, to a certain extent, his book The New Art of Making Books: “The text of a book in the new art can be a novel as well as a single word, sonnets as well as jokes, love letters as well as weather reports.”

Ulises Carrión (1941–1989) is one of the most important figures of Mexican conceptual art. His 1975 manifesto The New Art of Making Books helped defined artist’s books as an autonomous artistic genre. His work includes numerous artist’s books—which was then designated as bookworks—but also video art, sound arts, performance and mail art.

In (a, b, c) Ulises Carrión presents one if his early linguistic exercises in English, originally handwritten in green ink in 1972. The author observes and explores the structure of the sonnet. He develops fourteen interrelated sequences, which he uses as a key to codify a narrative. The text of each poem follows the schematic order of its title.

Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Collecting Europe, Victoria and Albert Museum, London. EU, 2017 is an abstracted version of the final part of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. This iconic composition has been used at historical moments, and is now the official anthem of the European Union.
