Produced on the occasion of the exhibition The Stuff That Matters. Textiles collected by Seth Siegelaub for the Centre for Social Research on Old Textiles at Raven Row, London, 1 March–5 May, 2012. Which presented the first exhibition of the collection of historic textiles assembled by Seth Siegelaub over the past thirty years for the Center for Social Research on Old Textiles (CSROT). The exhibition featured over 200 items from the collection and included woven and printed textiles, embroideries and costume, ranging from fifth-century Coptic to Pre-Columbian Peruvian textiles, late medieval Asian and Islamic textiles, and Renaissance to eighteenth-century European silks and velvets.

Nightcleaners (1975) by the Berwick Street Film Collective has long been recognised as a landmark of British experimental film and political cinema. Together with its companion film ’36 to ’77 (1978), it pioneered a film form as radical as the Collective’s politics. The films chronicle one of the key campaigns of the women’s movement in the 1970s. The campaign to unionise women night cleaners in London anticipates contemporary issues regarding precarious labour. To celebrate the first digital release of the films, a special box set has been produced containing the two films on disc, reproductions of historical material, including news sheets of the women’s movement – one designed by Mary Kelly, a member of the Film Collective, an interview with whom is also included as well as rare illustrations and contributions from the filmmakers.

Stephen Willats has made work examining the function and meaning of art in society since the 1960s. His work has involved interdisciplinary processes and theory from sociology, systems analysis, cybernetics, semiotics and philosophy. This manifests in wall installations, project works, films & computer simulations, drawings & diagrams, bookworks and texts.

Published by Raven Row, London, this publication was produced alongside the first survey of his work from the 1960’s. Introduced to art as a teenage gallery assistant in 1958, by 1962 he was producing advanced artwork, embracing the transdisciplinarity of the time, while juggling the roles of social scientist, engineer, designer and artist. With texts by Antony Hudek, Emily Pethick, Christabel Stewart and Andrew Wilson. Designed by John Morgan Studio.
