Nearer–Farther
Józef Robakowski
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2017, 112 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 16 × 23 cm, English
Price: €22

Józef Robakowski, a key figure of the 1960s and 1970s neo-avant-garde rebellion, is a master of structural cinema and a pioneer of Polish video art. In his practice he has tested viewers’ perceptual habits, developed ideas about mechanical recordings beyond any aesthetic convention, and criticized methods of visual persuasion in films, highlighting in particular the pompousness of political spectacles. A radical experimentalist and media analyst, Robakowski is known for his unique approach, “his own cinema,” in which autobiography replaces dubious history, and in which the artist proposes his own scenario for perceiving the reality of life under communism.

Cinzia Says...
Cinzia Ruggeri
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan & MACRO—Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome, 2022, 416 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 22 × 32 cm, English / Italian
Price: €50

Artist and fashion designer Cinzia Ruggeri (1942–2019) made her artistic research a tool for inquiry into the functional and semantic properties of the object and the architectural and social dimension of the body, according to an original and nonconformist perspective enriched by irony and oneirism.

Cinzia Says… is the first monograph on this unconventional figure who moved across disciplines with absolute freedom. Her life and versatile practice were driven by the desire to redefine the formal and functional status of elements of everyday life, from apparel to accessories, from furnishings to lighting. Ruggeri created imaginative, provocative, elegant, and never predictable worlds. This book is constructed as a broad, expanded chronology offering documents, photographs, accounts, and essays.

Hintertür
Carolyn Lazard
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2022, 144 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 23.5 × 16 cm, English / German
Price: €22

Produced on the occasion of Carolyn Lazard’s exhibition at Kunstverein Braunschweig in 2021. Hintertür points to the mutual embodiment of both the filmmaker and the viewer, animating questions of agency and access concerning phenomenological cinema. In addition, Lazard inverts Kunstverein Braunschweig’s spatial logic by implementing architectural interventions that fundamentally change how audiences navigate the building. In historic buildings, physical barriers to access are normally regulated by Braunschweig’s historic preservation codes. Alternatively, artistic interventions are permitted to make minor changes to historic buildings. For this exhibition, Lazard developed Remise ramp (2021), a ramp connecting two rooms, and Remise signs (2021), an alternative sign system. With texts by Jule Hillgärtner and Nele Kaczmarek.

Campaign
Pope.L
Published by Mousse Publishing, Milan, 2019, 167 pages (colour & b/w ill.), 14.5 × 21 cm, English
Price: €25 (Out of stock)

This book is a three-part report on the long-term collaboration between artist Pope.L and curator Dieter Roelstraete which revolves around issues of connectedness, home, and migration, while addressing art’s relationship to knowledge.

Begun in spring 2016 with an invitation, extended to the artist by Roelstraete and his colleagues Monika Szewczyk and Adam Szymczyk, to participate in the fourteenth edition of documenta, Pope.L’s contribution took on the guise of an immersive, seemingly omnipresent sound installation titled Whispering Campaign, consisting of thousands of hours of whispered content—addressing nationhood and borders—broadcast throughout Athens and Kassel using both speakers and live “whisperers.”
