Invitation produced on the occasion of Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s exhibition Dear Valérie… at Kunsthalle Bern, 22 February–26 July, 2020. Including works from the 1970s to the present. The exhibition focused on rarely shown works and bodies of works which have never been presented together before.

Since the 1970s, Marc Camille Chaimowicz has explored the space between art, life, and decoration. He develops interiors and spatial arrangements as well as various furnishings and decorative objects, paintings, vases, curtains, furniture, and wallpaper. In his work, Chaimowicz blurs the boundaries between private and public space. His formal language—in painting, interiors, and arrangements—perhaps refers to intimist painting from the late nineteenth century, including work by artists such as Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard.

An exhibition that considers the ongoing practice of the British curator and writer Lynda Morris. As with the term ‘artist’s artist’ there should perhaps be an additional category of ‘artist’s curators’ for which Morris would be an exemplary figure. Having worked for most of her career in regional British cities (inc. Nottingham and Norwich), Morris’ ongoing advocacy for the social realities and political necessity of art is evident in her most recent major project “Picasso: Peace and Freedom” an exhibition and accompanying book that she organized for Tate Liverpool, England, a project that considered the legacy of Picasso’s involvement in and support of the Peace movement.

Born in 1947, Paris, Marc Camille Chaimowicz lives and works in London. Chaimowicz’s continuous negotiation of two cultures and languages quietly reverberates throughout his pluralistic practice. He embraces both the fine and applied arts and challenges the categorical divisions between masculine and feminine, public and private, past and present.

Marc Camille Chaimowicz subtly intervenes in the gallery space, altering the atmosphere and décor of the environment. This catalogue, devised in collaboration with the graphic designer Adeline Morlon, reflects his working method, developing quiet, multi-perspective views of a spatial installation. Chaimowicz’s environments embrace the domestic sphere, incorporating interior design, ceramics, wallpaper and textiles. The exhibition at Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen documented in this book shows works spanning the years 1975 to 2005 and includes objects, drawings, photo collages and paintings.
