Michael Snow (1928–2023) was one of the world’s leading experimental filmmakers, having inspired the Structural Film movement with his groundbreaking film Wavelength, 1967. Snow’s extensive and multidisciplinary oeuvre includes painting, sculpture, video, film, sound, photography, holography, drawing, writing, and music.

Few artists have contributed seminal works to as many genres as Bruce Conner (1933–2008). An assemblage artist famed for his use of nylon stockings, he also pioneered the use of found footage and the high-speed film editing now familiar to us from MTV, and was one of the earliest filmmakers to use pop and soul music on his soundtracks. In the 1960s, Conner collaborated with Toni Basil (of “Mickey” fame) on his dance film Breakaway, and in the 1970s with Devo, David Byrne and Brian Eno on music videos. This publication examines the formal parallels between Conner’s works as an artist and filmmaker, and looks at drawings, oil and acrylic paintings, lithographs, prints, photograms and photographs alongside three of Conner’s best-known films: Breakaway (1966), Crossroads (1976), and Marilyn Times Five (1968–1973).

Margaret Honda’s films grow out of a sculptural practice that privileges a material relationship to the medium above any narrative or representational concerns. Honda aims to reconsider the standards of film production protocols, often rearranging the order in which things are done or utilising only certain aspects of the production chain.

Complementing Fisher’s Two Exhibitions monograph, this volume compiles the Los Angeles-based artist’s writings of the past three decades, from 1975 to the present. Fisher discusses his own films, paintings, installations and photographs and the works of artists such as Carl Andre and Blinky Palermo. A final section compiles his film and video transcripts and narrations.

Morgan Fisher studied art history at Harvard from 1960 to 1964 before attending film school in Los Angeles and going into film. He then worked in Hollywood for several years, mostly as an editor, an experience that shaped his experimental practice. In the 1970s, Fisher created several film installations that can be described as works of Expanded Cinema. From the mid-1990s, in a further development, he turned to monochrome painting and installations of monochrome paintings.
