A series of 32 artist books in a boxset, in the comic book format, conceived in tribute to the late Steven Parrino. Each volume is signed by a different artist, linked in some way to Steven Parrino, by projects and exchanges, by friendship, by reciprocal inspiration. Black Noise celebrates a format that Steven Parrino was fond of, a culture that was familiar to him. The only constraint upon the authors invited in spring 2005 was the format and the title of the overall publication. Some directly evoke Steven Parrino’s personality, whereas others produce a less referential contribution.

Produced in 2010 on the occasion of three large solo exhibitions organised at the Centre international d’art et du paysage de Vassivière (France); the Kunsthalle Bern (Switzerland) and the Parc Saint Léger Centre d’art contemporain (France), I Can’t See stands as the first comprehensive monograph on the work developed by American artist Oscar Tuazon. It reads as a full-page visual essay with a phantom narrative spreading over 250 pages that was composed by the artist together with graphic designer Pierre-François Letué. A compendium of essays, scripts, poems, and proposals by various artists, in relation to a Spectator: was compiled by Studio for Propositional Cinema for their eponymous exhibition at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover. In the opening text, Studio for Propositional Cinema—an artist collective founded in Düsseldorf in 2013—sets the context for the book’s investigations into notions of the script, staging, and the conditions of the exhibition itself. Other contributions include Keren Cytter’s rules and declarations for engaging life; Irena Haiduk and John Miller’s ruminations on the nature of the image and of the cinematic, respectively; a series of missives to Kevin Spacey from Cally Spooner; and an “open letter” by Christopher Williams detailing the labor and material conditions that have furnished the walls on which his exhibitions have hung.

This book is part of an ensemble of structures related to the nature of presentation in the Kestner Gesellschaft exhibition. Visually connected in their ultra-gloss white surfaces, they are meant to be seen as intertwined sites for the display of objects, the reproduction of images, the staging of performances, and the transmission language through talks and conversations.
