“In SHIMMER, A MANUAL OF UNDOING we present a series of hand-developed black and white medium format photos of Shimmer’s exhibitions-in-progress. The photographs were taken during the unpacking, the unwrapping, the decision-making, depicting the often-invisible labor of the art worker. Since 2018 we have been undecided on how to make room for these images, which seem to not fit into conventional forms of contemporary art presentation and documentation. They arrive long after the moment of their generation, finally finding their home in this book’s unsettled and unbound pages. Anna Oppermann (1940–1993) is best known for her “ensembles”—expansive and complex assemblages of drawings, photographs, notes, and found objects that she developed, often over the course of years, in idiosyncratic creative processes. The fruits of an approach that was both intensely visual and tenaciously reflective, her ensembles are explicitly open works.

At the heart of Thomas Ruff’s complex oeuvre is a pioneering conceptual expansion of what constitutes photography. Ruff’s prodigious output varies widely, from analogue portraits to manipulated images appropriated from the internet, digitally-altered archival images and digital photograms. Works by the Dusseldorf-based artist consistently explore how historical and media-driven changes in photography affect our understanding of the relationship between image and reality.

A comprehensive bibliography compiled by Seth Siegelaub, containing over 5,000 catalogued entries of books & articles, with a total of over 10,000 individual texts included in anthologies, reviews & magazines, published in all languages, mostly European (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish), 15th–20th century, treating all aspects of the history of handwoven textiles as art, craft, technology, industry & commerce. All entries are given with full author & title, edition, publisher, date & series title, with most provided with collations, & over 3,000 with a descriptive annotation, including a list of each text contained in anthologies, reviews & magazines. The work concludes with a detailed subject index of the most important books in each subject area.

Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Reinhard Mucha. Der Mucha: An Initial Suspicion at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, 3 September, 2022–22 January, 2023. The exhibition united long unseen installations with works from all creative phases at its two venues, K20 and K21, creating a panorama that spans more than four decades of artistic work.
